This difficult level circuit will take you on the plateau and on the trails of the woods of Rouvergue, to discover the Bories.
Description
This challenging circuit takes you to the plateau and along the paths of the Rouvergue woods, to discover the Bories. Often hidden, always mysterious, they grace the undergrowth of the Pays de Grignan. These dry-stone huts are nestled in old truffle fields and juniper thickets. Discover them all along the route, especially in the "Rouvergue" area. The "borie" (dry-stone hut) recalls the age-old Mediterranean art of building: the skilful stacking of stones, without any binding agents, to build overlapping walls. The bories you'll discover in the undergrowth of the Pays de Grignan region mostly date from the 18th or 19th century. They served as temporary shelters, sheepfolds, tool sheds, barns or granaries. The stones were stacked in "hutches" and then sorted, a technique more difficult than it might seem. A fragile heritage, these bories are threatened with extinction. No longer in use, and therefore in need of maintenance, bories are crumbling.
